Foot pains 101:
Why do we have it and how to deal with it?

By: Gabie Cruz // November 29, 2021

We tend to relate foot pains to our overall fatigue after a day’s work. But if you are suffering from foot pains, you need to know that there may be many reasons for that. Many health conditions are translating into your feet. Here are the causes and the best way you can deal with it:

WHY DO WE SUFFER FROM FOOT PAINS?

1. PHYSIOLOGICAL STRUCTURE – Some people are born with collapsed arches. Some have just a bit of collapse (supination) while others, a full collapse into flat feet (overpronation). This causes pressure and stress on the other body parts such as on the knees, lower back part, and also the foot. People with this condition tend to be more clumsy when they walk so they can easily trip and fall, which can be dangerous. Uncorrected pronation can also cause knee injuries.

2. GRINDING – As we use our feet in our daily activities, they tend to be overused due to walking, running, jumping, and climbing. The feet have an arch, special pillows, and small, delicate bones that bear the body’s weight, landing each time on the ground with a thud and absorbing the shock that shakes the entire skeleton.

3. SHOES - If you do not wear proper shoes for a type of activity or you tend to wear heels often, this might cause damage and shock to your skeleton and spine. It can also cause pain and deformity to your body to compensate for the unstable posture.

4. LIFESTYLE – Often our inactive lifestyle and wearing ill-fitted footwear cause our feet and ankles to get weaker. These reasons became prone to different types of foot problems like bunions, athlete’s foot, and plantar fasciitis which causes back pains and muscle fatigue, as well as  other foot-related health conditions such as foot ulcer, cold feet, and yellow toes.

5. CHRONIC DISEASES – Aside from overusing your feet all day that can cause your common bodily pains to occur, health conditions such as Diabetes and Arthritis might also be one of the reasons for your foot conditions.

According to Medical News Today, having diabetes brings a greater risk of developing foot problems due to issues with circulation. Because of the high levels of blood sugar in the blood vessels, artery walls can thicken as well as form calcium deposits. Because of this, the flow of fresh blood to the body’s tissues may become inhibited causing some pain in the foot.

WHY DO FILIPINOS SUFFER EVEN MORE FROM FOOT PAINS?

One of the reasons why Filipinos suffer more from foot pains and foot related-health conditions might be due to the increasing number of their population with chronic illnesses such as Diabetes and Arthritis. According to research from Annals of Global Health, people are not aware that they have chronic illnesses such as diabetes since diabetes care in the Philippines is disadvantaged and challenged with respect to resources, government support, and economics.

Research shows that more than 4.2 million Filipinos are suffering from arthritis and rheumatism due to increasing obesity and ageing of the population. People with this chronic problem experience pain and stiffness, making it difficult to walk properly and normally.

Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death among Filipinos based on the data from the Philippine Health Statistics, and over 6 million Filipinos are diagnosed to have diabetes, as declared by the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation.

HOW CAN WE SOLVE FOOT PAINS?

Adopting a good posture has long been studied and proven to be one of the reasons responsible for minimizing body aches and pains. According to an article from podiatry today, good quality orthotic insoles may help to improve your posture and enhance postural stability by providing more support and cushioning your feet needs for your daily activities.

According to research conducted by runrepeat.com orthotic insoles may help correct pronation by supporting the arch of the foot in reducing the rolling inward motion of the foot while running. Therefore, wearing orthotic insoles might be one of the reasons to help manage pronation and stabilize the feet and ankles to avoid needless injury.

According to an interview we conducted with Dr. Gonzales, an Orthopedic Surgeon who specializes in Orthopedics and Traumatology, with a subspecialty in Foot and Ankle Injuries and Surgeries, he stated that wearing orthotic insoles may help improve our feet’s natural state and support our body and its movements. One of the reasons that may cause feet and ankles to get weaker is often our inactive lifestyle and wearing ill-fitted footwear. That is why Headache, Migraine & Concussion Centre suggests that wearing orthotic insoles may help support our feet. It can also help to strengthen and improve those muscles that have weakened or those ligaments that have loosened or tightened due to our inactive lifestyle and wearing ill-fitted footwear.

The most common benefit of wearing orthotic insoles according to Dr. Gonzales is Pain relief. Pain relief from years of your feet being in a wrong position, and from years of your feet being unable to move naturally. So wearing orthotic insoles can help your feet get back to their natural shape and function.
